TOURING BY SCOOTER
There is no better
way to see the spectacular sights of Margarita Island
than by scooter. To really see all that the island of
Margarita has to offer, we recommend at least three ½
days of touring and maybe a fourth day for shopping. We
have personally explored the island by scooter, and with
the help of the very friendly locals we have discovered
these three spectacular tours.
1. The Nature Tour
explores the unspoiled beauty of Macanao, the western
part of the island. Most of Macanao is a government
protected park, with some of the world’s most beautiful
virgin beaches. The terrain is enhanced by rolling hills,
that open to sweeping ocean vistas as you tour the
winding, surprisingly traffic free paved road. Check out
beautiful La Restinga and take a boat tour of the canals
that are lined with mangrove trees. Or, stop in at the
Marine Museum! Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at Punta
Arenas at the very tip of the island, and be back in El
Yaque in time for the great afternoon winds. Approximate
tour time: 4 hours.
2. The Historic Tour
winds north through the scenic seaside town of Juan
Griego, past the historic fort, and on through the lush
flora and fauna to the artisan villages of El Maco or
Agua de Vaca, where guests can purchase hand-made
souvenirs. Approximate tour time: 3 hours
3. The Beach Tour is
one of our more popular tours, that winds its way around
the very northern peninsula of the island. The
spectacular cliffside views of Playa Manzanillo are
breathtaking, as are the seafood lunches. Along the way
south, guests can stop to visit some of the more
established beaches like Playa El Agua, or the hip
surfer beach called Playa Parguitto. Approximate tour
time: 3- 4 hours.
4. The Shopping Tour
encompasses all types of shopping, from high-end
designer stores, to the flea market and all of its
bargains. The best mall in Porlamar is called Sambil,
and is conveniently located on the main road in town.
This mall is massive and contains all of the high end
stores, as well as several higher end restaurants and a
movie theatre. Rattan Plaza is another mall, closer to
El Yaque with upscale clothing stores and great
restaurants, particularly a good sushi restaurant.
The main shopping street in Porlamar, called 4 de Mayo,
is located right downtown and is full of upscale shops
and boutiques.
Of course, there is the flea market. This is also
located on the main road and is closer to El Yaque. The
market is huge, and is full of all kinds of great
bargains – including lots of board shorts. Approximate
tour time: as short or as long as you like.
*Note: It is
recommended to always wear sun block and sunglasses
while touring on a scooter. Helmets and maps are
included in the rental fee, and a cell phone is
available for rent. Guests must present a valid driver’s
license and a credit card to be eligible to rent the
scooters. The scooters have storage under the seat for
an extra hat, a long sleeved shirt, extra water etc. A
lock is also provided in the storage under the seat. It
is not recommended to operate the scooter after sunset,
as visibility is poor.
