Orinoco Delta
The Orinoco Delta is
a vast, intricate labyrinth of waterways weaving through
a simmering virgin jungle to carry the waters of the
Orinoco River to the Atlantic Ocean. It is home to a
varied and abundant tropical flora and fauna. An
uncountable number of channels cut through it carrying
water from the Orinoco River, the largest in Venezuela,
to the Atlantic Ocean. As the centuries have passed the
Orinoco has formed into one of the largest deltas in the
world. This humid jungle paradise also is home to
mangrove swamps that boast a rich diversity of bird life.
Why The Orinoco
River Delta ?
The Orinoco River Delta in Venezuela is accessible yet
still virgin. Its web of countless small and big rivers
allows us to venture deep into spectacular galleries of
untouched beauty. We use fast strong boats to get as
deep as the Delta permits. Then we change to smaller
boats with smaller motors, and finally we do it just
like the Warao Indians did it for thousands of years, we
penetrate 1-2 meter canals by dug-out canoes. With the
blasting sounds of the Howler Monkeys and the sharp
curious screams of the Blue and Gold Macaws protesting
our invasion, the effects are unforgettable. (view our

When is the perfect time to visit the Orinoco Delta ?
Any time all year round.Rainy or dry season we are
always privileged to have few brief refreshing showers.
How many days should we spend in the Orinoco Delta ?
A good average stay in the lodge is 2 nights. This will
give you a fair exposure to the Delta attractions.
Another option is to combine the lodge with our deep
jungle Simoina Camp. It requires 3-4 nights program
spending the first and the last night at the lodge. For
detailed description check our excursions section.
How about mosquitoes ?
Mosquitoes are public enemy #1. They are everywhere. We
tend to have a bit more and we learned to live with them.
Long baggy pants, thick socks, boots, oversized long
sleeve shirts, and a good repellent high on DEET should
take care of them. That does not mean you can not wear
shorts or swim in the river. It always depends on the
time of the day and the place. At the lodge you will be
staying in clean well designed comfortable cabins
totally sealed against mosquitoes with beds and private
bath. At Simoina Camp and for some mysterious reason
mosquitoes are almost nonexistent. Anyway you will be
sleeping in hammocks with netting. Few beds are
available for emergencies.
Expeditions
One night / two days offered by major tour operators in
Venezuela mostly from Margarita Island as part of a 8-10
days circuit. The circuits include Orinoco Delta, Gran
Sabana, Caripe (Guacharo Cave) and Canaima (Angel Falls).
Most of these trips are booked in advance in Europe.
Individuals and small groups book the Delta for 2 to 4
nights.
For this segment of our guests we offer two options:
Near by Expeditions,
2nights/3days
All excursions will be around our base camp (Orinoco
Delta Lodge). This includes visiting the Indians and
taking a glimpse of their way of living and a jungle
walk with experienced guides to venture into this
mysterious world of the Warao Indians. Here you can
touch and smell what you usually see only on television,
the tropical rainforest.
A boat trip to observe the fauna and flora of the area,
a quiet canoe ride in a small river, fishing for
Piranhas, a spectacular sunset with cocktails on the
boat, and a night trip in a canoe with spotlights to
blend in the delta darkness.
This trip starts from Boca de Uracoa or Tucupita. Please
contact us for further information on how to get there.
Accommodation in beds in comfortable cabins for 2 - 4
persons with private bathroom.
Included: River transportations, all excursions,
meals, drinks on excursion, accommodation, guides,
towels, long rubber boots (up to size 12/45).
Not included: Drinks at the bar, tips.
Far out Expeditions, 3-4 Nights
One year ago we decided to venture a little more into
the delta. The result was the construction of a second
camp called Simoina. The name comes from Simoina River
which means "Land of Honey" in the Warao Indian's
language (Simo = Honey& Ina = Land).
Simoina camp is a simple and rustic structure situated
deep inside the jungle. It consists of a few typical
Indian style dwellings, one big thatched roof house for
sleeping, dining room with a bar overlooking the river,
a kitchen and shared bathrooms. Here you can rough it up
"Indian style" as much as you want – anything goes.
Sleep in a hammock* (mosquito netted), fish for Tarpon**
in a small tributary in the jungle and search for
caimans with spotlights at night. Cross the jungle in a
canoe through a 1-2m wide canal which was dug out by the
Indians about 80 years ago to access some rich fishing
and hunting grounds.
On this excursion you will spend the first and the last
night in our base camp (Orinoco Delta Lodge), the other
night(s) in our rustic camp Simoina (approx. 2½ hours
from the lodge).
This trip starts from Boca de Uracoa or Tucupita. Please
contact us for further information on how to get there.
Included: River transportations, all excursions,
meals, drinks on excursion, accommodation, guides,
towels, long rubber boots (up to size 12/45).
Not included: Drinks at the bar, tips.
